Interlaken, a small town of approximately 27,000 residents in the Bernese Oberland, has long been a popular tourist destination. However, like many global hotspots, it’s currently experiencing overtourism, particularly during the peak season from mid-June to early September, when about one million visitors arrive worldwide.
To avoid large crowds and queues at popular attractions like Jungfraujoch, Lauterbrunnen Valley, and Grindelwald, we strongly advise visiting outside the high season. The spring (mid-April to mid-June) is an excellent choice, not only for fewer tourists but also for its picturesque meadows bursting with colors from blossoming flowers against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Alternatively, early autumn (September to mid-October) offers a unique experience with a descending snowline and vibrant fall foliage after the peak season has passed. Both seasons have distinct advantages, making it difficult to declare one superior.
A potential drawback of visiting during the off-season (both spring and autumn) is that some places might not be fully open or may be closing due to snowmelt or snowfall impacting cable cars, train rides, or mountain passes. However, most major tourist attractions remain operational even during these times. If you have specific must-visit locations in mind for your off-season trip, we recommend double-checking their opening times to prevent disappointment.
